Unique fragrance for a unique day

Initiated in the 90s, fragrance creation has became a trendy chic experience. Whether it is to suit your own personality or a scent for the wedding reception to revive magical moments in the future , perfumes are very complex mixtures of olfactory elements depending on the evaporation process of the perfume.

The perfumers, also  affectionately referred to as a "Nez" (French for nose) due to their fine sense of smell and skill in smell composition, describe the final substance as a three-parts mixture of chemicals referred to as sets of notes.

The first note is the fragrance, made up of the essences you will first notice and which can last for two hours. They are fresh compounds that generally occur naturally in lavender, laurel or rosemary and give a first impression of good smell.

Then, the middle note compounds form the "heart" or main body of a perfume and act to mask the often unpleasant initial impression of base notes, which become more pleasant with time, the one that will help you to recall your memory. It is less intense but lasts longer, from two to four hours.

The last part, is the scent of a perfume that appears close to the departure of the middle notes. It is used to bulk up the fragrance and  makes it last, sometimes for days by bringing depth and solidity to a perfume. Compounds of this class of scents are vetiver roots, patchouli, musk, and they influence the middle and the top notes.

There is no single "correct" technique for the formulation of a perfume. When you go to Roja Dove perfumery, at  Harrods 5th floor in London, known as the most quoted fragrance expert in the world, they will offer you many fragrances in order to determine your taste. If you go to Jean Patoun they will help you to choose the fragrance that suits you best by following you a day long to catch your personality. A perfume has to fit your style, your personality. Some perfumes have powerful scents and reveal a charismatic woman, as delicate perfumes, enhance a confident statement about who you are, others will create an impression of sophistication and elegance. The perfume you choose has to reflect your deep personality.

Now comes the moment to create your fragrance by blending essences in the perfumer's laboratory. Of course the process is complex as it can take from 3 to 24 months. You will have to make few tests before taking home your bottle of perfume. The perfumer would not disclose the unique formula of your fragrance because it usually remains his property.

So now, there is no more waiting to wear your creation! « Spray your perfume on all the places where you are likely to be kissed » as Coco Chanel put it to advise ! On your skin, hair and clothes. But be careful, do not apply the same amount of Eau de parfum, as you would apply a Eau de toilette because the former is stronger and lasts longer !

Safety precaution : In summer if you are going out in a sunny day, avoid spraying perfume on the areas that are going to be exposed. It's better to spray on your dress as the sun can produce photo reactions that can burn skin and leave blotch on it for ever.
