The engagement ring

As a symbol of his love and devotion , buying an engagement  ring is not an easy task for a man who wants to please his loved. Yellow gold or white gold ? Diamond or sapphire ? It is very difficult for the groom to-be to choose the ring his "special lady" will be wearing every day. Even though there are many way for him to find out her what jewellery she likes or dislikes (what style of jewellery she usually wears, which ones are her preferences while window shopping...), most of men would let her pick it out herself. The is definitely not the best way to surprise her, but at least you are sure to not get it wrong.  Obviously, how much you spend is a personal matter, but you have to bear in mind that most people would save one to two months' salary for an engagement ring (Check our directory).

Generally there are 4 categories of precious stones in fashion : diamond, sapphire, ruby and emerald.

DiamondDiamond : symbol of long-lasting commitment

It is the hardest naturally occurring mineral, and the most brilliant and expensive gemstone. The name diamond is derived from the ancient Greek (adámas), which means "unbreakable, untamed". It is the preferred gem for engagement rings. Colourless diamond, are by far the most common, but you can also find  yellow, pink, red, orange, green, black... Some colours are very rare, as the red, green or intense yellow or pink.

Diamond are commonly judged by the “four Cs” (The 4 Cs) :

C for Carat : it refers to the weight of the diamond. A carat is equal to 0.2gm, or 200mgm. The more carats, the more expensive and precious.

C for Colour : The most valuable and rare colour is white, that is to say, colourless.  However, diamonds with a very strong and distinct colour such as pink, blue or red, also called "fancies" are extremely rare and out of reach for most.

C for Clarity (purity) : Evaluators of diamonds base part of the price on luster and sheen. These relate to the clarity of the stone. The important thing to bear in mind, however, is that the less flaws visible to the naked eye, the more expensive the stone.

C for Cut (size) : As the only characteristic of a diamond not influenced by nature, cutting a diamond is a real work of art. A good cut predisposes the amount of light that can enter into the stone, refract and emit that brilliant quality that people love in a diamond. The more complicated cut, the more expensive.

SapphireSapphire : Symbol of eternal love and fidelity

Blue sapphire is the most common colour and higher in price. A part from the vivid blue, the sapphire gem can also be pink, yellow, orange, green... which is very special. A star sapphire is a type of sapphire that exhibits a star-like phenomenon known as asterism. That causes the appearance of a six-rayed 'star'-shaped pattern when viewed with a single overhead light source.

Ruby Ruby : symbol of love, passion and power

A high quality ruby should have an intense red colour. The finest ruby is best described as being a vivid medium-dark toned red. Ruby rings look stunning when combined with gold or platinum settings. It is an ideal engagement for someone you love.

EmeraldEmerald : symbol of true love

Like all coloured gemstones, emeralds are as precious as sapphires and rubies. Emeralds occur in hues (colours) ranging from yellowish green to bluish green. The primary hue must, of course, be green. Emerald tends to have numerous inclusions and surface breaking fissures, which makes it very difficult to cut.  Stones that lack surface breaking fissures are extremely rare and therefore it will cost you more.

Which is the most flattering ring according to the hand shape ?

Short and large fingers: avoid flat bands or very  thin ones. A setting that's extremely delicate could get lost on large hands, over-emphasizing their size and making the ring look smaller.

Long and slender fingers : you can almost wear any style of rings. But remember to match it with your personality.

Wide and long fingers : the main thing to remember is to choose larger rings. Women with long fingers can easily wear bold ring styles.

Good to know : Any variations rather too hot or too cold could increase or decrease your actual ring size. It would be better to try on your ring at the end of the day in a jewellery store to make sure your ring will be both comfortable and look perfect on you.
